Which year model to choose?
One other thing I like about the '06/'07 is that you can use some of the aftermarket products made for the KLX300...suspension tuning parts, Acerbis 3.7 tank, etc. somewhat easier than the '09 and later models.
Donning my flame resistant suit before relaying this message... one of my friends recently said that the newer model KLX250S look too much like a China bike, and liked the looks of the older KLX250S a lot more.
I agree.
Damn, I should always go back to re-read original posts after a few days b4 replying. Thought he was only asking about the engine.

Just clarifying, there were significant changes from first (06=07) to second generation (09-14):
- Plastic (including front/rear fenders, radiator shrouds, side panels and headlight shell)
- Speedometer (second gen has a digital unit)
- Forks (second gen has less travel and shorter overall length)
- Shock (ditto forks)
- Linkage pull rods (first gen: 117mm, second gen: 119mm. longer = shorter ride height)
- Overall appearance became less like the original KLX250R/300R with the second gen KLX250S.
- Second gen came in two colorways: lime/black and red/black
