RE: whats with the crappy dealer photos
Well, that narrows the field for you, but not by much since there are tons of great bikes out there. You haven't mentioned Yamaha, KTM, Husqvarna or the myriad other possibilities. Pick a bike you can live with and buy it already! Jeesh. But most of all, get some good protective gear too, some professional instruction and some help when learning to ride - bikes are dangerous and very unforgiving. You don't get very many second chances and you can consider yourself lucky if you get one. It sounds to me that your budget is very tight with little wiggle room - my advice is to buy a bike for about $600 less than what you think you can afford, and put the rest of the money in the helmet, protective pants, protective jacket, and protective boots. Get some good quality protection - jeans and work boots don't cut it. Get motorcycle specific protection with the pads in all the right places. The utility of those are way more important than what the extra $600 can buy in terms of additional motorcycle. They can keep you alive long enough to enjoy your bike, and your next bike after that.
