Hi all,

More questions. I'm trying to fit all my tools in a fender pack, while leaving the backpack for food/water/gear/survival stuff. I like the stock one, but it's a bit too small. I checked out these ones in a shop near me, and they seemed quality.

However, it seems like we have very limited fender space back there. I removed the rack (for aesthetic reasons), and just want to get a larger bag. But even the smaller dirt bike gear ones had mounting holes that were fairly far apart, and I didn't think they would physically fit on our rear fenders.

Has anyone sized up on a bag?

 

I fitted an Otter Box and that holds most of the tools I need for trail work.
I like the fact that it's hard but I don't know why.
In addition I use a front fender bag that holds spare tube, pump and pressure gauge.

The things I carry in my back/hydration pack are, drink (2 litres), energy bars, first aid kit, spare elastic straps and a stubby holder.

But, the Otter Box will have to go as I will be fitting a Nomad aux fuel tank.
For longer trips I will use the Dirt Bagz.



The fronter fender pack was a cheap ($A14) canvas bag that I bought at a camping store. Bolted it straight to the guard.

Those classified as "fender" bags look pretty stout, but way pricey. The material looks good though. Tool bags almost have to be made out of some rugged stuff not to die from the contents bashing around back there. This weekend while looking for something to carry tools and such on my KLX, I found a ballistic nylon tool bag with a plastic insert bottom at Harbor Freight that was just the right size. The bag is intended for carrying around a small amount of tools in a vehicle and such, but it will work well for my rack. I notice they had quite a number of different sizes and styles. I got mine on a clearance for $8.99. It might be worth a look. Thinking about it now, did those fender bag models come with any tools as part of the purchase price?

 

Thanks for the replies. As far as stoutness goes, that's one of my top priorities. I definitely don't want to be halfway out in the middle of nowhere with a mechanical issue, only to find that my bag has ripped or fallen off. That's the main reason I was looking at those dirtbikegear ones rather than moose/etc., I've heard they are number one for durability. Though you are right, they are not cheap. That's the main reason I didn't just buy one and see. They do not come with any tools, just mounting hardware.

That hard case one looks interesting, though I would be concerned about lack of 'give' in a crash...?

Swing by your local bicycle shop - they have all sorts of bags in a variety of shapes and sizes. I've seen other folks use soft coolers for fender bags.

I used an army surplus store and got a suitable bag for under $10.

Plenty of straps on it too and "army tuff."
