Here's the KX250F air cleaner fiche as supplied by Kawasaki.
Here's the KLX250S air cleaner fiche as supplied by Kawaski.
I don't think they're too compatible.

ive seen people saying that the K&N is suitable for this type of use... while i dont think its "fire proof" the fabric used isnt easily combustible.

Agreed, I removed my backfire screen, Also removed it on my DR too when I had it. Never had a backfire Or a Problem. But I also run a K&N Air filter too though. If you remove the backfire screen get Something besides a Foam Filter.......
My 2 cents

RE: What Exactly Does Backfire Screen Do?
K&N has some airfilters that have built-in backfire protection, but the K&N model for our KLX250S does not.
From their description, it sounds like the backfire protection is a wire mesh screen that's integrated into the airfilter itself. The performance improvement over stock is that there's great surface area to the air filter's built-in screen (which would pretty much equal the area of the air filter itself) than there is to stock screen.
It doesn't look like there's a fire resistant air filter available for our bike yet, but hopefully as it gains in popularity, something will show up on the market soon. I'll bet the first vendor to offer one will probably have a lot of backorders to fill!

I wouldn't sweat it if you have the CVK. With a CV carb, there is almost no chance of creating that kind of fireball during backfire. Now a flat side pumper is a whole different story. I was going to cut my screen out, but my dealer/mechanic recommended I don't do that because he knows I plan to put pumper in. He said that with a pumper cutting the screen would put your bike at great risk because the extra shot of fuel generates a pretty good fire ball.

Tremor38,
You are so correct! I can remember many times having a backfire on the race car. It didn't have a "backfire screen" or anything to break up the resulting fireball, which is very, very real. I have seen that fireball come out of the hood scoop. I've seen cars with burned circles in their hoods because of it.
So, to answer the original question in a Christmas Spirit - it is December now . . . . . . .
"What Exactly Does Backfire Screen Do?"
Are y'all ready for this . . . .
It keeps your chestnuts from roasting on an open fire!

and i dont want roasted nuts......
i was helping my dad one day work on his truck, '73 chevy, and he had the air cleaner off, and was trying to get it to run.... well it back fired and flames shot out of the carb and went around all 3 sides of the hood which was up,,,, was pretty scary... but funny.... my dad lost some arm hair... me+my dad + fire = bad news.... we did the same thing with the cook top in the kitchen, and the propane grill, exploded the gas in the gril enough to open the lid.....
