Angry Timing for KLX 250

HI Guys,

I am, for the first time, trying to replace a set of worn rings on my 83 model KLX, and having only ever worked on cars, have a few questions. I did look at the website with on line manuals, but they do not go back as far as my antique, and I am having trouble getting information on timing, among other things

I have the rings, but have been told there is a right and wrong way to put them on, (though they didn't tell me how to find out) and Also I was told I had to crack the crankcase to do the job, so I removed the screws, only to find I didn't have to, and I cant get the whole thing to split, and now have to seal it and get the sealant in so it doesn't leak.

Its a nightmare, when you get incorrect information.

SOOOOO.....

I am looking for any information on how to get the crankcase sealed again, (even if I have to open it all, please tell me how) and also replace the rings, (do I need a ring compressor to do it), and then, of course, the correct timing set up.

I can find the timing mark on the magneto, but cannot find the one that is meant to be on the cam sprocket, (I was told it was a little mark, but I dont have one, all I can find is an embossed word "TOP" right at the very top of the timing housing in the head. Is this where I am meant to allign my timing mark for the bike to?

I am desperate for this, I only have a week to get it back together, before I take the kids on holidays for a ride on a bike that at present, is in 100 pieces.

Hope someone can help!!!.

Thanks guys.

I've seen those online manuals. They like to tease you with just a tidbit of " free" info but they look pretty good and there are "user testaminials" that say they are great. Trouble is too much online stuff is bait n switch or pumped up with hype they don't live up to. It's too bad for individual companies that are on the up n up.
