Default Wanted: a nice rack

My project continues to enable my humble '06 KLX to get me thru an eventual multi-day dirt riding/camping trip, maybe 1000 miles in total, in the middle of nowhere. And I'm looking for some advice from fellow riders who have replaced the stock rack.

I'm starting to brainstorm ideas for a rear rack to carry extra fuel, tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad. I intend to carry the rest of my essential gear on tank bag and a small/medium size backpack. I want to avoid panniers because I think they'll become more of a hindrence on some of the single-track's I'll be riding. I tend to pack light, taking only the essentials, and I'm confident I can get everything I need in the tank bag and backpack.

I've seen the cycleracks.com option, but I guess I'm not a fan. It seems kinda wide and rather fugly (IMO), althought I can definitely see the functionality.

High on my radar is the Precision Motorcycle Rack with the Alumirack extension plate. I can afix a rotopax tank back there, and still strap the tent and sleeping gear over the top. Or, instead of the rotopax, I could likely figure out a way to secure a couple of MSR bottles underneath on the sides of this rack. Anyone else running this setup?

Input is definitely welcome.

Yeah, I was hoping the title might generate a bit more traffic!

I half expected someone to link to HOTD thread....

Default Fugly?

And the alum ext thingy is sexy?

No subframe concerns with the cycle rack. Damn near indestructable and provides many grab handles for pickup points. I've never had any issues of it getting in the way when riding like I stole it...which is all the time.

Forest,
I have a cycleracks that I've never used.
If you decide that functionality may win over fugliness, let's chat. I'll make you a deal.

and too pull one from hotd

drm: I'm definitely not claiming the Alumirack gadget is sexy. Only that, in my eyes, less of an eyesore than the cyclerack unit. Again, I do acknowledge the functionality of the cyclerack. It's aesthetics bugs me though - strictly a personal opinion.

You do bring up a most valid point regarding subframe structural integrity. I hadn't considered that, thanks.

I installed the Precision on my 2018. Very high quality rack. Was floundering on how to carry the tool kit until I stumbled across this high quality, waterproof, yet overpriced bag from Yeti. Built in velco straps secure it to the underside of the rack. Got to show off my home made exhaust heat shield too.

I know, an overpriced Yeti, who knew?

Wow. I got a deal on mine. Ace Hardware had one on sale for $30.

I got rid of the black mid piece of plastic above the rear tail light wiring which made more room for the Yeti bag.

I ordered the 6" sissy bar for the rack yesterday. Will post pics when I get it installed.

I was on the fence about ordering the side luggage racks too.

I finally ended deciding to try a Sherpax trailer instead.

I weigh north of 250 lb and am tired of riding overloaded bikes off road. I rode for several years on a KLR650 so I got a whole closet full of the T-Shirts. And yes there is a KLR somewhere under all that stuff.
