Default Upper Cylinder Clicking Noise

I have a new noise in the upper cylinder area. It is not the valve clearance or the cam chain. Any suggestions? It actually sounds like a loose valve clearance, but I have checked the clearances 3 times and all 4 are well within specs. It uses no oil and does not smoke. 18000 miles.

You may be right about the cam chain, but how did you eliminate it as the source of noise? This is the classic "odd" sound that this engine will make in many instances. Otherwise it's a rather quiet motor.

Hey post, first of all welcome to the forums, if you want you can give us a proper introduction when you get a chance. As far as the noise, its probably the cam chain rattling. Get the manual adjuster and you will be a happy camper. What year is your bike?

The cam chain could still be your issue as you cannot tell by looking if your tensioner is bad, The sign of a problem is alot of noise comming from the top of the engine.

Default Cam Chain

First, thanks for the replys. I must reconsider the cam chain. I will order the manual adjuster today and when it is installed, write back with the results. I am planning on a 2 day AMA off road run with the Arizona Trail Raiders in a few weeks. I really need the bike to preform to its potential.

Default Upper Cylinder Noise

Members,
Wow, I cannot believe that I got the speedy responses from the group. Not only that, but you were able to diagnoise the problem. I ordered the Krieger cam chain tensioner. It is installed and bingo, no more clicking noises! Awsome..... and Thank you very much. I am off to Colorado next week to enjoy some fall color around Ouray. I will also watch the forum in the event I can contriute.
