Default Transmission woes...

My dad's KLX 400SR blew up today. I've googled around a bit, and figured that the cost to rebuild the tranny yourself is about 500-700, and to get it rebuilt by a dealer would be +700 or so on top of the cost of parts. I've never opened the tranny on a bike, but I am fairly mechanically inclined. Figuring that I don't have much to lose (I can always take it to the mechanic if I cant get it back together!) I was thinking about doing the job myself.

Any and all advice appreciated.

P.S. where is the KLX 400 Forum???!

It's not rocket science to do anything to a dirtbike...but you do need a good service manual to go along with a good mechanical aptitude. Also you'll likely need some somewhat specialized tools.

Now that you mention it, there is no KLX400 forum here. Doesn't matter though...for the KLX400, what you really need is a Suzuki DRZ400 forum - as the KLX400 is just a rebadged DRZ400 with green plastic.

you won't know what it really costs till you tear it apart. iy may not even be the transmission at fault? shop manual and take pictures along the way it can really help when putting it back together, if like me, a year later

While you're at it, shop around for a complete motor. Might be able to grab one for $500 or so and then use the old one to learn on.

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to take it to the shop to save me the hassle... Would hate to have the bike in pieces and THEN have to take it to the shop! I was thinking about buying a used engine, but in the case that I get an engine that already has issues, I would be out of luck, and out of $500+, so I am a little hesitant. Hopefully this job won't take ALL of my money
