I've seen too many people set their 1/2" torque wrench to 80 something & snap a 10 millimeter bolt off that was supposed to be in in-lb not ft-lb. I realize this is common knowledge for any technician but we have many people that are just starting out with mechanical maintenance.
Yeah, I'm a student of the "measure twice, cut once" school of thought.

The wrench has a double chart, so I don't need to worry about converting. Just have to make sure I'm looking at the correct tic mark! I guess if I'm gonna hand torque something, I'll just use my hand...then attach a socket and give it a tiny tiny little more push.

So - for the oil drain plug on an '09, you reckon I should use a torque (manual says to) or just hand-torque then tighten it a smidgen with a socket wrench?

You are best off using a torque wrench. It's always the safest way to know that bolts won't be too loose and fall out or stripped/snapped off.

yep 1/4" torque wrench here, but after you've done it several times you kinda get to know what the torque is and can do it by hand, unless of course it is a head bolt or similiar, I will always use the torque wrech.

Chris.
