Default Tire Changing How-To

ORIGINAL: incabiker

So I gotta wait for the 606 tires to be delivered and then I gotta learn how to change them.

incabiker,

Tire changing on the KLX250S is rather straight-forward. If you have even changed a tire on a bicycle, it's quite similar. A bit more muscle is needed, but the moves are pretty much the same.

Here is a link Changing a BMW Motorcycle Tire that gives a lot of information and lots of pictures. Most of the steps are the way I do it, but I have some things I do differently.

First of all, I have a pair of sawhorses that I use to work on. You can lay the disc between the sawhorses so it does not get bent. Also you can stand up and change the tire. I like working better standing up, so that is the method I have used.

I use 3 tire irons. Two are used to hold the tire as you spoon more of the tire onto the rim. I have had, as I am sure most folks have had, the frustration of having what you have just done get undone with one quick slip.

USUALLY the tire is easily loosened from the rim by simply pressing on it, hitting it with a hammer or whatever other means you need to use. In the event that it resists all other mean, I have a neat little tool - a bead breaker that is nothing more than a wide plastic wedge with a curved edge on it. Here's a pic -

I got it from Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports. It's a great tool to have around. If you don't have any tire irons, I also got mine from Fred - I use the long Motion Pro ones. There is a nice curved end for spooning the tires on. I think they're about 14 inches long.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the information, this will help us out a great deal. So my question is if we are out in the middle of the woods and we have all the accessories to get a tire changed, then how do we lift the rear of the bike up to be able to take off the wheel on the bike?? Also how would we put the rear wheel back on? Same with the front?? Seems like it would be hard to lift the rear of the bike and at the same time try to put the wheel back on it. I have seen people bust there tire when I go riding, but they have those stands in the middle of the bike that lift the whole bike off the ground, unlike ours with a kickstand.

Thanks in advance. Can't wait to get the tire so that I can change it and ride again. I was going to get the Kenda 270s but I heard they are very squirrly on the road, so I will pass that.
