Reserve/fuel mileage ?
This is what happened. I've been trying to figure out my MPG since I did the rejet, etc. Last week I noticed that I had 90 miles on a full tank and was on "RESERVE". I turned the petcock to ON, so I wouldn't get stranded. And yes I double checked to make sure of the petcock position. Today I took off at about 100 miles on the tripometer and every thing was good. At 119.3 miles, the bike started running out of fuel, I switched over to reserve and went maybe 100 yards and the motor died. I pulled off to the side of the road, looked at the petcock position and I had in fact turned it to reserve, opened the gas cap and saw nothing but metal. I could hear a very slight amount of gas in it when I shook it. Tried to start it and nothing. I called several buddies and finally found one that could bring me some gas. I put less than a half a gallon in it and it fired up. I turned the petcock from reserve to ON, and proceeded home about 4 miles away. About a mile down the road it sputtered and I turned the gas to reserve and made it home where I filled it up using the non-ethenal gas that I have been running. Has anyone got a clue? It has me baffled and I don't know what to do to make sure I don't run out of gas again besides adding a fuel bottle (which I plan to do). My luck somewhere in the middle of no where with no cell signal. Please help! Oh, by the way, to mak matters worse, as I was sitting on the side of the road, I tried to light a cig and my lighter was out of fuel too. There also was a (CLOSED ON SUNDAY) gas station I just passed a half a mile away. Wow, what a day.

Just guessing here...
- Check the routing of fuel lines from the tank to petcock. (Main and reserve reversed?)
- With tank empty, use a small mirror and flashlight to look in tank and inspect the two fuel pick-ups. Make sure main has the tall stand pipe which when the fuel level drops to it, leaves the reserve fuel amount in tank. Maybe this stand pipe is missing leaving you with a small reserve???
Don't know other than that to check.

No offense but double check you have the reserve and the ON positions sorted correctly. When I first got the bike I was running on reserve all the time and lucking out on refueling before I ran out. When I did run out I was about 50yards from a fuel station and just pushed it.
The petcock has a long and a short side to it. The short side is kind of ramped down and I assumed that where that was pointed was what you were on. In actuality its the long side that indicates. It also has a small embossed arrow which I never noticed until I went out and looked at the bike prior to this post. One way to be double sure is look at where it says OFF. Only the long tab of the petcock can point to the OFF so it is the one that determines where you are getting the fuel from.
Of course you may have not made the same mistake I did and like Canklx said the routing of the hoses may be switched.
Cheers Jim

Thanks guys, the bike is full of gas now so I will either have to wait till it gets low or drain it out. Unless the lines were installed incorrectly at the factory, that shouldn't be the case. Also, the long side is pointed correctly, that is the arrow as you mentioned maninthesea. I really don't know. I've hit reserve before, so I don't know what happened. Thanks for the responses. I'll let you know if I find something. Thank goodness I was close to home. Now I need to build or buy a rack and keep a fuel bottle with me so I don't get stranded.
