Fuel reserve

Fuel reserve
So I've noticed something bizarre lately. My 250 has been getting significantly better gas mileage lately. First it went from a consistent 63 mpg to 72. then at the next fillup it went from 72 to 78. The first time I attributed this to a change in revolutions and duration in my choking method due to temperature increase (2 min @ 3000 rpm) to (15 secs at 2000 rpm) and thought nothing of it. The second time I attributed to the fact I replaced and balanced my tires (OEM) and lubed the axles halfway through the tank. However, with this increase in mileage, my range has remained the same. It starts choking up like its out of gas at around 308 miles like it did when it was getting 63 mpg. I know the mpg numbers are accurate since they are calculated from the pump receipts and the speedo.
The most likely cause that I have thought of is that the fuel reserve, if it runs on a float, is off, but the service manual says nothing about the reserve system so I have no idea how it is even setup.
another more unlikely idea that I had is that the 10% of ethanol the gas stations have is less dense than gasoline and is taking up more volume in the tank and giving greater mileage (although highly unlikely since I tested whether higher octane made a difference in its economy earlier in its lifetime and found it didn't.)
If anyone has any idea how the reserve system is arranged or any other suggestions please post.

RE: Fuel reserve
I was talking w/ the owner of a bike shop just a day ago about some issues w/ my bike. He said that there are to hoses (a longer and a shorter) that come into the bottom of the tank. the longer line is for your regular gas supply, and the shorter line is your reserve. When your fuel level goes below the first, you switch your fuel valve over to reserve. He said, make sure that its in the on position when you fill your tank. Dont know if this is anything that might help. just thought I'd add my 2 cents
