That's pricey. I can buy a new kit from a Kawa dealer in Australia for $650 keeping in mind most things are at least 30% more expensive down under...

I have ridden bikes with the pumper and it felt stronger, but not worth the expense that the carb costs. Think about it, you are only shooting more gas into the cylinder, the engine displacement will only make so much power. If i had more money than i knew what to do with id put a pumper on, for that matter id buy a bigger bike. But i would concern myself with actual performance gaining goodies, 351 kit... aftermarket cams... I would for sure buy the cams before i bought a pumper. I just didnt get the WOW factor as i did with other things... I have ridden many klx's with many different setups.

Ahhh why can't you guys all agree?!? well I ended up ordering the whole shabang - bore kit and carb. As someone pointed out above, the whole thing is unnecessary so I figured I might as well go overboard and not wonder later.

Now oscillating between whether to do the install myself or pay a shop. I'm fairly proficient but never done a top end. Plus carbs and needles scare me

I had Bill's pumper carb for a few weeks. I took it off and sold it. The throttle response was very crisp, but for me, it made the bike unrideable at very low speeds, because it was TOO crisp. The guy I sold it to is enjoying the heck out of it though.

When I do the 351 (hopefully in the next month or so), I'll keep the stock carb.

Rob: "TOO crisp". That say's a lot. I don't ride in the dirt much so "too crisp" might work well for the riding I do. Thanks for your post.

I think it is actually on the road when you're doing those small adjustments to maintain speed is where the "crispness" is the issue with a slide carburetor. The CV carb smooths out that action because the slide is actually vacuum lifted and acts as a bit of a damping action to hand actions working the butterfly. Slide carbs on street bikes can be problematic for that reason too. That is why virtually all streetbikes with carbs came with CV carbs after about 1975 or so.

But I will say I am considering a slide carb from a 250 or 450 MXer for my 650. I just know there will be more power. I'm just not sure how it will work on the road riding. If I get a good deal it will be under $200... I'm in no hurry though.

Those remarks citing "too crisp" and "unrideable" are strange to me. The KLX is almost sluggish in comparison with the CV carb. The pumper just makes the bike respond better and in a way that is very complimentary...not scary. I'm not sure we can do anything to the KLX that will make it unrideable or too powerful...except maybe nitrous.

And I'm pretty sure mine increased the top end of the bike and how fast it gets there. In addition to being 2mm bigger, you look down the totally smoothbore throat of a nice, flat-slide design like this carb, and you can see why it can provide better WOT performance.

Thanks again Rob. So now that you are here in Oregon, lets hook up. As for the pumper carb and if its worth it. Yes, especially if you ride in the dirt much. I will NEVER go back to the CV carb due to its slow response time. Don't forget to upgrade your cam chain tensioner too.

Is upgrading the cam chain tensioner an absolute with the big bore?
