Default Opinions? 1997 KLX300 I'm looking at

Hey all - I've been researching KLX250's/300's for a while now. There is a 1997 KLX300 for sale about 120 miles from me. Here is the add:

"1997 KLX 300 new tires, chain, cables, brake pads, air filter, carburetor rebuild, new turn signals, front fork seals completely gone through service ready to go very reliable bike" - asking $2500.

From discussion with the seller the bike sounds like it's in nice shape. Says it starts one kick hot or cold. He says he's owned it for about two years and is looking to move to a pure dirt bike. Says it was owned by an older guy before him and was never abused.

The bike is plated and titled as a dual sport which is what I'm looking for and a big plus. I know there were no significant changes over the years to the 300 but, I wonder if I should be concerned with the age?

He's said to make him an offer. He had difficulty uploading pic's so there were no pic's with the add. He sent me a pic from his phone but he's going to get me close up shots when he gets home from work.

I'm a mechanic and have owned and worked on many bikes so I know what to look for in a general sense just curious what's the general consensus of the forum about a KLX300 from the 90's?

Thanks,

It's what you're looking for - a dual sported KLX300. I wouldn't be concerned about age if it's been cared for. Get it for a fair price and if you don't like it, sell it. Does it have all the DS equipment to make it street legal? Here, I can go down to DMV with an affidavit that I've done the conversion and get a plate, even if nothing has been done! There's no inspection.

Post some pics if you get it.

Known weakness's:
Intake valves
Shift star
Kick start idler gear.
ACR timing

$2500 seems pretty steep.

$2500 is about $1000 too much for a 97, IMO.

That's what I was thinking...guess it depends on what the local market is like. 20 year old machine, though...

Agree with you all it seemed pricey at $2500 considering it's 20 years old.

I offered $1800 sounds like we have a deal.

I'll be sure to post pic's if/when I get it.

Thanks.

Plated, titled, 300cc and way lighter than a 250s. $1800 is a good deal.

Plus in pricing it depends on what is available where you are at. If the supply is low the price will grow.
