Default Oil filter spring trick to hold in place?

changing the oil for the first time on the KLX250 and see there is a spring behind the oil filter. is there an easy way to get the spring to stay in place as you push the filter in?

Take a pair of needlenose pliers and open one link of the spring enough to grab the teeth in the case. Insert filter, insert bolts, insert drain plug, add oil.

I just drop my '06 onto it's left side and pop the spring and filter into place. Easy!

Good, that is exactly what I did after I posted the question. You would think they would put a peg or something in there to hold the spring in place.

Wierd, my 09 manual specifically says to use grease to hold the spring in place.
