Default New KLX300 - cam specs change at all?

Hey Gang,
I was wondering if there was any information out about whether the cams were changed for the 2021 KLX300 - that might make them an upgrade for those of us who have installed BB kits?
(Or did the 250s already have the same cams originally used in the early KLX300?)

Thanks,
TC

From what I've read, they put KLX300R cams in the 2021 Dual Sport and SM models.

This is the chart for a completely stock Dual Sport.

... and a video of the test.

https://www.dirtrider.com/story/test...300-dyno-test/

There is a weird "dent" in the chart so there must be some kind of electronic restriction.

Thanks Tooter.

Do we know if the KLX250S cams were anything less than KLX300R cams?
I think the last year of the 300R was 2007? The 2nd gen 250S came out in 2009 but I don't recall anything being said about cams.

Perhaps a moot point, I was just curious - thanks!

As far as I know, Kawasaki is still making 300R's.

2021 Kawasaki KLX300R

... and all the 2021's use the same R cams.

Sorry, I don't know anything about the eariler years as this is my first Kawa.

Haha, I wasn't disregarding your 2021 - it must be nice in EFI form. I thought the carbureted KLX300R went out of production years ago or are you saying they remained in production in other markets until getting EFI and coming back to the US as a 2021?
Without drilling out the choke jet on the carbed 250S (or big bore), the thing was a bear to cold start!

Ah, that's what you meant.

It's still the same 300R... just with FI now.

Thought it might be a topical question since the new 300 came out... tossed it out there in the interest of discussion.

The intake cams show the same part number for 250 and 300 from 1995-2019. Exhaust shows different number, but odds are that has to do with the compression release or something like that. There were no numbers for the 2020 models in the Partzilla listings, so not sure if anything there. The exhaust cam number changed in 2012, 2009, and 1997

The interesting part is the cam sprocket numbers. The same sprockets were used on both 250 and 300 from 2005 up, but the 1995-2004 KLX300 has different cam sprockets than the later 300 and 250. Not sure what the difference is. There were a set of sprockets for sale on ebay, but I didn't feel like blowing $20 to see what was the difference.

Thanks for the input klx678! So there probably is not anything new under the sun!

Now wouldn't it be funny if the 95-04 sprockets were indexed and marked in "marcelino" configuration!!!!!! Haha!

TTFN,
TC
