Default New to KLX

I am new to the KLX250S world, I bought mine 6-7 weeks ago, but due to a title issue I have left it alone, but now title in hand I'm getting started..

I have a 2009, 6K miles previously owned by someone who was pretty hard on it and I am hoping to address all it issues before spring, the plan is make the motor a bit zippier, it is bone stock, and spruce up the cosmetics.

Yesterday I took the carb out and apart, it took me 1/2 an hour to figure out someone had put the intake manifold on upside down!

The few times I rode it, it was an extremely hard starter and pretty soft on the power.

So, with the carb, I cleaned the jets and whatnot, I pulled the plug on the mixture screw and turned it out 2.5 turns and shimmed the stock needle up about .030. I drilled the slide to 7/64 and reassembled it. And I set the float level to 17mm.

Yesterday it started easy but today at 15 degrees F it turned over a minute or so before it lit, but when it lit it didn't need much enricher but it started hard.

I am not done with the engine mods by a long shot but I am wondering if drilling out the enricher to .018 is pretty much a necessity.

Thanks in advance for the replies, the sense of the picture is; that's my H2 Kawi I built from a box of parts, I have the H2, an H1, a S3, a ZRX1100,a XR650R and a Valkyrie Interstate, besides the new to me KLX.

That is one beautiful H2!
If it doesn't start easy, assuming valves are in spec, drilling the enricher to 0.018 inches does the trick for most of us. Especially if you're trying to start it at 15F. And since you asked that question, you must have spent some time here looking around already. Welcome to KF.

Or graft on a spare H2 cylinder and mix up some premix!

Yes, I need to check the valves, I am sure no one has done that, I was going to move the cams when I was in there.

By the looks of your bikes that KLX is in good hands. Beautifully done! Love the H2. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks, since the kids are grown and gone, my motorcycle hobby has turned into a bit of a collection.

One might ask why I would buy the KLX, with the rest of my collection being what it is, well, I have always like dual-purpose bikes, I have had a lot of them over the years, although I generally have very powerful bikes, I also enjoy bikes you have to "get after" to get up to speed.

Due to yesterday's unseasonable warm temperatures, I spent some time riding the KLX, we both had fun, but the lack of low end power is a factor, thus moving the cams is near the top of the priority list.

There seems to be plenty of power once you wring it neck and get it wound up, just needs some low to mid boost,

One thing I am addressing is the rough condition of the plastics, I am going to try different techniques to see if I can get them back to near new condition, but if not, I'll spring for new parts from Mother Kawasaki.

The guy who had the KLX before me was pretty hard on the cosmetics.

Love the collection also. I too have a Valkyrie, does seem strange to some people that I have a Valkyrie with Gobs of power and most often prefer to ride the KLX...Just a phase I guess, will probably migrate back to the old girl soon. In the meen time, enjoying the KLX plenty. Keep us posted on your Mods.

My buddy had a blue 1972 H2, so I went out and bought a left over 1975. Not content as it was, I eventually sent the cylinders off to Dennis Dean for the 120hp mod, and had 2 sets of Denco chambers-one with built in mufflers, one with stingers.

A friend here used to be a neighbor of Allen Millyard who's built multi-cylinder monster bikes include a 6 cyl H2. All accomplished in a tiny little one car garage.

Millyard's stuff was incredible. I think he did a V12 with the Kaw LC six, but not positive. Definitely did the V8 with Z1 parts. The beauty of the Z1/KZ1000 and the two strokes was the pressed together cranks that made modifications to numbers as easy as pressing together whatever he wanted, like a 5 cylinder two stroke... cool stuff!
