The clutch switch will stop the bike from starting if you're in gear and the clutch is not pulled in - otherwise you could hit the starter button in gear, clutch out and it would move/lurch the bike forward - not very safe. If you broke the switch, I'm not certain which if the two outcomes will result - Either 1. it won't start in gear with the clutch in; or 2. it now will start in gear with the clutch out - depends on how the switch works (normally open or normally closed etc.)

It is normally open when the clutch is out. Makes contact when the clutch is pulled in. With the switch broken it will only start in neutral. you can bypass it, connect the two ends together. But like rgmr250 said it will start in gear with the clutch out.

Congrats on the new bike. Sounds like a good deal. As for mods, what are your expectations and budget?
