Default New here, new bike need help

Hey all I just picked up a 2000 ninja zx7 the kid before me had it sitting for 3 months, I can hear gas in the tank and it sorta crank but doesn't start. Headlights light up but not bright. Could it be the battery or starter possibly?
Sorry if this is stupid I'm new to bikes and don't know much about them and thanks for the help

You scored a zx7, and did not do a search in kf first? Shame on you. Welcome to KF

Charge battery, and go from there. If it doesn't take a charge, get a new battery. When you get it started, hopefully you wont find lot's of other stuff wrong with it. It would also be a good idea to drain the tank, and refill with 93 octane gas prior to starting it.

Good luck!

Drain the carb bowl, charge the battery, then give it another try. It will start.

Got it started the other day, battery was dead, put in some gas treatment and a few gallons of new premium gas. Thanks!

Rule #5 of Ron's list:

GASOLINE IS LIKE MILK.
TAKE A HALF GLASS OF SOUR MILK, TOP IT OFF WITH FRESH MILK, AND DRINK IT.
You can't. gas is the same. the two will reach a common octane that is usually just barely usable. resulting in, poor acceleration, hard starting, plug fouling, and if not run out soon, bad gas again!!!

That tank was near empty, and I dumped in 4 gallons.

As a complete newby, I'd take an MSF course and learn at least the basics of riding first. Then, and only then, as you currently know nothing about bikes, bite the bullet and have it professionally serviced. That way there'll be no nasty safety surprises waiting to bite you.

You'll have plenty of time learning your way around it and how to service it later.
