Default New 07 KLX250

Picked up a like new, old 07 KLX250 today. 1500 miles on the odo. Appears all stock. I have LOTS of questions. Not new to bikes but new to the KLX. Previous bikes were 08 KX450F, 06 KX450F, a few KX250 2-strokes, CRF230, 93 XR650L and probably some others I've forgotten about. Showing my age here but the 93 XR650L was bought new and my first DP bike.

Only have about 10 min on the bike so far but see I'll need to gear it down quite a bit for the trails (new sprockets and chain).

My first issue, which I've already figured out with a call to the previous owner, was how to unlock the gas cap.

First question: I need a shop manual but don't see any for the '07. Will the '09 shop manual be the same? An owner's manual would be convenient too. Are those all the same across the model years?

Welcome. You've come to the right place.
The '09 manual is fine for an '07. If you want both, PM me your email address. Looks like I also have an '09 owners manual.

If you swap sprockets do yourself a favor and use a 14T front then go big on the back to minimize chain wrap, which causes a bit quicker wear on sprockets and chain. Also distributes load over more teeth.

As for the shop manual, if you dig around on line you will likely find a .pdf version of a manual for free. An 09 might work, but odds are good you can find one on line. The general drive lines are the same, the differences will be in the suspension, at least the front fork. I actually have been using an early 94 and up version for my 09.

Thanks for the replies. Lots of new info to take in.

klx678: If I keep the 14T front and go with a 50T rear will this work with OK the factory chain guide or wear it out too fast? And if so, what length chain would I need?

edit: Wanted to get the chain & sprockets ordered ASAP. Ordered a new 14 for the front, 48 rear, and 520x112 x-ring chain.

Don't know. I ran a 47 without problem. I never count links, since I install new chain with sprockets and cut the chain to fit without counting the links.

I have an '06...identical to yours...and I had to modify the lower chain guide just in front of the rear sprocket with a 50T. It was easy as there are numerous mounting hole options on the attachment point of this guide. Study it a little, and I think you'll see how it can be moved forward a hair and even down a little if needed. Later I went to a Hot Foot Moto chain guide, and it had to be modified a bit too. It really wasn't hard to do.

I found the 14/50 setup to be perfect for my needs. I only use highways for making connections to trails and dirt roads. The bike will cruise at 55 with no issue, but I wouldn't like to go much over that for any distance. If you're a commuter who has to scream at 65-70 in freeway traffic, 14/50 gearing would not be good...but then, I think you have the wrong bike for that.

https://www.kawasakiforums.com/forum...install-45134/ Fender swap.

14/48 gearing, 110 chain links. You can go 13 to 15 on the countershaft with that chain length. I am currently running the 14/48, taller than I'd like for pure off road but riding with my brother and his KLR 650, so good enough for now.

Got any pics of your bike? I’m looking to get a similar used bike next spring. How do you like the bike so far?
