I think it could be moved up, but not sure if the seat pan would fit as well, and then I think I would have had to cut a slot behind the seat for the tail light wiring harness to pass through. Thanks about the chain, it does look tight in the pics, maybe I hadn't yet adjusted as I had just changed cs sprocket. I run plenty of slack, though. I posted as someone had asked how to go about it. I'm sure it can be done better.

I used a newer 2005-09 fender and mine came out the same way. If I moved the fender up any more forward, the seat/pan wouldn't have fit at all, and it would have looked much worse. Just like reinigef said. Plus, It would push the front of the fender down leaving a big gap, and would make the fender just a tad to short alowing the tail light sticking out passed the fender which wasn't to my liking. Fact is, the fender isn't as wide as the side panels, so even if it was moved up, there's still s gap from another angle. Yeah, I tried everything, perhaps a different fender would have fit better, but honestly, it looks much better in person. No one had ever questioned it in 3 years, only a few here...LOL I'm happy with it, and I'm the most **** person there is about perfection. It still looks better than the stock monkey *** 2 piece fender IMO. All my pics can be seen in the "My Bike Pics & Mods" link below in my signature.

I'll add that under the seat where the new rear fender meets the inner fender, I over lapped it like the stock fender was, but since the shape and fit wasn't a tight seal, I used a piece of old thick inner tube and riveted it in to seal it well. Helps keep out dirt, water, etc.

looks great. i'm real close to trying. is one brand better than another as a starting point?
i have been tempted to fiberglass one - could use the existing pieces as a mold and get the exact shape/fit/bolt holes easily.
