I've generally had good success with bike shop mechanics. I must be lucky. The Suzuki dealer in Pocatello where I lived in the 80's had a fantastic shop mechanic (Mike). That guy rocked.
Our local Kaw dealer, Carls Cycles, appears to be fairly well recognized for their decent work on KLRs and snowmobiles. I've seen a number of posts on KLRs for folks who've had them do big-bore projects. I don't go there though, because my local independent shop rate is significantly less. I now try to do as much as possible myself. It's enjoyable, and I want to learn how it all works.

I also have a local indy shop that is good for stuff I won't do anymore, you can tell he's good as it takes about a month to get stuff in as their service is no secret. When I bought my new Harley back in 07 I special ordered it and gave a 2K deposit and was told to come back in 6 weeks. Well 6 weeks later I went there and they had never heard of me, they had no bike and didn't intend to get me one unless I could prove I was in there 6 weeks prior, luckly I had the paper work but right then I knew I had problems. That wasn't the only issue just the first of many.
