Default Dealer Rant...

My dealer wants $50! to install a new rear tire on my bike, but only if I buy the tire at their already inflated price of $66.95(for a Kenda K270). So I asked if Igot the tire elsewhere what would they charge to install it... $85!!

Am I out of line, or is that just outrageous?? $50 to install 1 motorcycle tire? I know plenty of people who swap 4 summer/winter tires on theircar twice a year and only pay $10-15 each.

F'em

Buy three good tire irons and do them yourself, it's really not hard....well ok the first time is a bitch but it is very rewarding and confidence inspiring toknow how to patch or replace a tire anywhere, anytime without help.

Watch this vid ..... parts two and three will show up on the right.

It really is as easy as he makes it look.

That price does seem right on the high side. My local dealer wanted $30 a tire. I was going to bring everything in, until he told me, "We won't install internet sell tires". Ticked me off, so I blew the next 2 hrs doing everything myself. And to tell the truth, its not all too bad. Just take your time and check things as you go. And make sure you don't pinch the tube.

dealers charge a flat hourly shop rate. you have to look at it like that. what is it about 1 hour to completely change a tire form start to finish. the mech has to make his wage as well as the extra the shop has to pay the govt for that employee (which around here is about45.00/hour+extra=60.00/hour for wages alone!!)as well as operating costs and such. shop rates around here are between 100.00-140.00/hour depending on what it is(car truck bike) So you would be better off buying the tools and learning to do it yourself. And remember it is the time not the tire.

If you have a local Cycle Gear store, try there. My local store only charged me $15 to install my "internet" tire, and even installed the bead lock I bought in their store at the same time.

My dealer does it for $15 off the bike or $25 on the bike, but if i buy the tyre there i can sometimes not pay for fitting if i can talk my way out of it.

ps thats AUS dollars - not much difference now $0.96 US for $1.00 AUS.

I dislike our local "small town" Kawi dealer. They act like they are the only ones in the world who can sell a Kawasaki. I told them that there is a dealer in the Oakland (200 miles away) who can sell me a KLX 250 for $5299 out the door. They had previously told me about $5800 out the door (CA tax, lic, doc, SET UP and SHIPPING FEES) plus they didn't have one in stock. I asked if they'd split the difference with me when they got one. They said probably not because they don't have a problem selling them. I said fine, I'll spend a day driving and a tank of gas to save over $500. I don't mind paying the gov't fees but they charge $350 for set up and shipping, that is their cost of business not mine. Plus they are so smug about the whole deal. Well we really don't need your business is basically what they told me. They didn't have to sell me, I knew what I wanted. I have owned three brand new Kawi's now; 2 ATV's and the new 250. I bought my first ATV from the local dealer and driven to Oakland for the last two. At least in Oakland there is no "only game in town" ego.

Some of the dealers in Seattle will swap out the tire for free if you buy the tire from them and bring in just the wheel. You pay more for the tirebut if you are in a hurry and just had your nails done......
