He (& you) are wrong.

Gear ratios amended to set 6th gear closer to 5th for improved performance There is only one meaning

What this means in the english language is 6th gear has moved CLOSER TO 5th. NOT 5th HAS MOVED CLSER TO 6th. There is only one way to accompliush this.

Good point, but I still disagree... You are assuming they have made no change to 5th, but the statement does not say that precisely.
It says 6th is closer to 5th. It does not say 5th gear hasn't changed (it very well might have).
At any rate - this is good news - makes the 13t counter sprocket less necessary... [:-]

good point, the 123-tooth sprocket may not be necessary anymore. but I bet it would still help bottom end, especially in a stock setup. According to klx'ers argument, it says "Provides excellent acceleration as well as relaxed highway cruising". So if this is true klx'er, it would contradict your whole basis of debate on them lowering 6th gear as that would not add up to "relaxed highway cruising". I would say that they re-ratioed the whole gearbox or maybe made 5th taller so there wasn't such a gap between 5th and 6th.There's really only one way to tell, heck, maybe they just fitted a 13-tooth front sprocket from the factory and then use the new ratio to support their new claims. Someone would need to see the new tranny ratios and then compare them to the old KLXS. I can admit when I'm wrong, but so far no one has provided any evidence to make me think otherwise.

edit: one thing that I thought of is that anyone who knows the KLX, knew that 6th gear was quite useless in stock form. but by using marketing techniques, and stating that 6TH gear has been improved leads the reader and potential buyer to think that 6th has been dealt with when really it is probably 5th that has been improved to get it closer to 6th, so the bike will have enough revs to make 6th useful. If you retune or regrind 5th gearso it doesn't drop off right after shifting to 6th, this is an improvement and also an "amendment" to the 5th gear ratio. It's all marketing and play on words.

Really all that effort over that little 6 gear change!
Snail adjusters dont look cool and are cheap, but they are faster to adjust.

IG, I admire your delusionment. Maybe they developed an entirely new engine while they were "re-ratioing the entire gear box" & it will now pull a CR500 in an 100 yard dash.

if you read the specs on the new model instead of making kawasaki brochures yourself, you'll see that the ratios between 5th and 6th have been brought closer together. Nowhere does it say that 6th gear has been lowered. Also, I don't know about you but a one degree increase in rake is a good thing to MX since it raises the forks and makes the front end respond quicker, no more "chopper" look like the current KLX has with the forks. The suspension has been firmed up which the old bike severely needed as it is as soft as a 20-year old couch. Beefed up wheels/spokes is also a good thing to a MX'er. Yes a slight loss in travel is something to be concerned about, but as tremor pointed out it may not be as big a deal as some of us think. If the suspension has been revalved it may make up for the 1.5" lost or whatever. Either way, I'm not thinking that many of you guys actually jump the bike hard enough to bottom it out and if you do, you're probably too big for the oem suspenders anyways. Also, the new swingarm is a good thing as well- it's more rigid and easier to adjust plus it's not 15 years old in design. I'm still undecided on whether to get a new red one of these as well, but it's not as bad as you make it sound. If anything, it's better suited for off-road now with all of it's new weaponry, the only thing against it is the loss of travel which may or may not affect you depending if you use this type of bike to take MX triples. Everything else is a definite positive. Just adding thicker spokes is pretty cool to think about in my book. I didn't even mention it's better brakes, no more worry about that stupid front brake line hanging down in the rough ready to be snapped off.
I'm glad now that you're explaining to me how I ride and what is better for me. Thanks
Also this whole conversation is purely specualtion with out proper facts (and that is what you always claim to have the inside track on) Interesting reading about "if this"and "if that", when we all know that "if" the queen had *****, she'd be king!

I visit these forums daily and have one thing bugging me senseless. Why in the world would someone go out and buy a klx, supposedly mod it heavy, complain about every aspect of the bike, sell it,buy a different bike that is the schnitz, sell it and actually want another klx? I dunno,it just lingers in my mind as WHY? (just one of my rants)

hokie- dude, get a life and forget about IG when you're at your pc. Do I really play that big of a role in your life?

CR500's weren't really all that, it was the KX500 that everyone was/is still afraid of.

VFR- I guarantee you'll have a new '09 so just STFU!
