Default intro and first mods..will i need carb jetting?

Greetings! Just purchased a '07 klx250s with 3550 miles in Pennsylvania. The only mods I can tell were done was a 13T CS and a skid plate.

As you all know, the bottom end is very anemic under 6K RPM. I've been reading pages of threads about mods. However, I don't have a proper moto education, thus am not fluent in a lot of the language and my head is spinning. So please don't be short with me for asking a question that may been answered in a bunch of other threads.

My question is if I change my snorkel, upgrade my airfilter to 2 part foam or K&N, and purchase an aftermarket slip-on exhaust (with the stock header) what should I expect in terms of performance changes and will I need to change the stock jetting?

Thank you.

The throttle response is also mush, so I guess a pumper carb (newly learned, thanks guys) is in my future. Anyone know the best place to purchase one that is as close to plug-n-play as you can get?

yours truly,
007

Welcome to the forum..

Yes, you have to change the carb setup when you mod the exhaust side and intake side..

Get the slip-on, DJ2152 or DJ2206 kit, call DJ and get a DJ140 main jet. Pull the airbox lid off and install that stuff and you'll have a whole new bike, from the 16 or so HP (at the rear wheel) you have now, to about 22.

"as close to plug and play as you can get" - that's call to Bill Blue at B&B Cycle Restorations for his TM34 modded for the KLX..

From my reading of your post it sounds like you want do the mods slow at first. The first thing I would do is uncorked the exhaust. If a slip on muffler is not something you want to do right now you can modify you existing muffler and let the bike breath. Doing the intake side before the exhaust won't give you that much if a performance gain. The outlet on the OE exhaust is so small and opening it up will give good results. Then proceed to the jetting and intake mods. Do a search for the exhaust mod.

If you do plan on spending money straight off save some cash and jump right to a big bore kit with the TM36-68 carb. The bike becomes a completly different animal. I spent money doing all the mods and ended up with extra parts that are sitting in my shed after I went with the 351 BB kit.

mmmm tasty crayons. pink is my favorite..

anyone know if the FMF Q4 fits the '07? FMF says it won't on their site, only '09 and up???

Am i on the right track for more low end torque, or should i be obsessing about other mods right now without going as far as BB or cam work?

slipon+stock header+DJ140/2N lidless+MCM is practically the same power as a BB351 kit on an otherwise stock bike. And all of the above augment a BB351 install as well.

I have an FMF Q4 on my '06 (same as your '07).
I picked it up used from ebay. Seller said it was for '09+.

If you own a KLX250 you need to do jetting. Period. If you do Dyno Jet KLXter knows that. If you do the KLX300 jetting per the hop ups riders have done over the years with the KLX250 I have a link in my signature that tells you the part numbers, including the KDX220 big snorkel and any other tricks. Some information about the pipe jetting may be there too.

My brother and I went with the KLX300 parts and added the Dial-A-Jet fuel adder, kind of like the Mikuni PowerJet, adding fuel mix when the engine is drawing lean. It compensates for lean fuel mix. I had used one on my KLX650 with excellent results. It didn't need any actual brass jet changes even after putting in a big bore piston and a full reverse cone megaphone exhaust. Not so lucky on the 250, but we've only had to do the jetting one time, no main changes.

Either way you will appreciate how the easy starting and quick warm up, because both worked well.

Klxster,
Can you speak to the reason behind using a DJ140 main jet vs a 128?
Found this on you tube and these guys use a 128 with good results:
