ims 12l tank
#11
Thank you IMS!!!!!
...
PS - My 2009 has an 80 mile safe range. I hit the 0.5 reserve right between 75-80 miles. Kills me. I went 103 miles and put 1.9 gallons in the 2 gallon stock tank.
So I barely get more than 50mpg. Not sure how people are getting 60mpg plus, unless they just putt around 2 gears too high and don't really ride their bike. I usually have mine constant at 8000 rpm around town and like to keep the front end light. Plus I do a lot of highway in top gear and full throttle to hold 70-74mph (82-85mph on the actual speedo which is way off from reality). The stock 2 gallon stock tank limits my riding. So that limits my pleasure since it makes me live in fear of running out of fuel in some areas I would love to ride. And out of fuel in the Sonoran Desert is not a good feeling.
So 3 gallons is 150 miles on a tank of gas. That is good. 180 miles is ideal though (3.6 gallon). 150 is still good. Can't wait to get this bad boy on the bike so I can do some of the rides I been hoping to do.

For my part of the country, the range of the stock tank is very limiting. I can't wait to get a larger tank - I'd have gone with the 3.7gal Acerbis, but my bike is red and it wouldn't look right. Even with the new IMS ~3 gallon tank, I'll likely need to pack an extra can on the back. 3.5-4.0 gallons would be nice, but I'll take what I can get.

jimmy, where is this avernus tank? theres always the acerbis if you want the wing type of tank. 3.7 gallons, really drains 3.3 but you can tip the bike side to side to get a little more.
personally, i have the acerbis, and it make the bike feel different from full to empty, and i think .4 of a gallon of gas just sitting there is not cool. also, if you ride this bike like a true mx bike (i know there are a few of us...), its a lot wider then stock and makes it weird throwing a leg out to hit ruts.
to answer a few people, yes this is for the 09, ims already makes on for the older bikes.
finally, after 3 model years, we finally get a bigger tank we DONT have to mod to fit.

Email from Chuck at IMS last Friday
Hi Gary,
We are about a third of the way thru on a 3 gallon tank for the KLX250S. An ETA would be late July/ early August. The IMS tank will use the stock mounting hardware and radiator shrouds. We will for sure offer black, natural & Kawa green but the reds we have don’t match well with the Kawa red. Here are some pictures of the pattern for the mold on and off the bike to give you an idea of what to expect.
Thanks,
Chuck

While here in AUS we actually prefer like 25-30L tanks for adventure touring (check out AUS made Safari tanks for other bikes DRZ etc if you havent seen em yet), but honestly they are great for commuting as well because its like 2 weeks between refills and >500km between fuel stops!! - not so good would it be for tight trail riding...but we have clark etc anyway for that. Really 12L is what every bike should come with stock! its criminal Kawa can do such small tanks on a "dual sport".
