Default Idle changing

rode the bike to work today (about 40 miles round trip right now) and went for a ride afterwards, noticed that my idle is bouncing around the longer I ride the bike. After the bike has warmed up initially its happily idleing at 2000. after about another 15 min or so of riding when I let off the throttle it will idle about 2500, then drop off until it reaches about 1300 10 seconds later. Followed by lugging itself out and stalling.

The bike is also now a royal bitch to start in the cold, didn't use to give me near this much trouble. all this started when the 120 DJ main jet, softer spring went in. I have a q4 slip on and the snorkle removed, 2800ft elevation.

Check your diaphram, might not be seated quite right and leaking. Could also try puting the snorkel back in, the 120 may be too small with no snorkel.

I'd look at the pilot circuit having crud in the pilot jet or the orifice into which it's fitted.

+1 on the pilot jet area.
Take the jet out and blow some compressed air through it. Make sure you can see light through all the openings.
Carefully clean out the area the jet sits in with carb cleaner and air.
It only takes a spec of dirt to mess with you idle.

good luck

Not sure of your model year but idle speed for 09+ is 1300rpm +/- 50 rpm

In my experience a plugged pilot leads to serious off throttle running issues. Does your bike run like crap just off throttle or just idling? The pilot jet is not just for idle it affects up to about 1/4 throttle.

sorry the bike is an 09 sf with 4k miles. Idle was set at 2k when I bought the bike

bike seems to run just fine throughout the rpm range, just the idle changing is the weird part. Throttle cables move freely as they should. I'll take the carb apart again if needed but wont be able to dig into it for probably a week.

Also since it looks like i'll be digging into the carb again, has anyone tried getting rid of the stock airbox completely and running a cone or cylinder filter instead? K&N Universal Round Tapered Cone Air Filters
