How do I tell if the jetting is too lean?
Today I got part way through the mods. I installed a Keihin 125 main jet with the 40pilot jet along with a KLX-300 header and muffler. The clip that goes on the N1TC needle flew off and was lost so, that will have to wait for another day. I did not have what I needed for the fuel screw so, that's waiting for round two as well. I took the air box lid off and wonder if I need to get the KDX snorkel. It certainly seems to be moving a lot more air andstarts a lot easier now.
I took my motorcycle for spin in 100+ F temperatures in the Sonoran desert (~1,000 feet above sea level). It seems like itpulls a lot harder from idle (the 120 Dunlop 606 rear was previously a little hard to get rolling from idle). While I don't have anything scientific to support my belief it is pulling harder now, it sure seemslike itaccelerates harder in the lower gears, of course the roar from the KLX-300 muffler may be messing with my head a little since it sounds sofast now. From 3,000 RPMs in 6th, it pulled hard enough to accelerate but nothing to get excited about. I should note I'm at stock gearing right now.
My main question at this point is, am I running too lean? The fan never kicked on (at least that I could hear) and the idiot light for overtemp never came on but, it seemed like I was getting some extra heat off the engine. It didn't ever ping or smell hot but, it seemed to be hotter then normal. I'm pretty sure it's not too rich because I got no backfires or popping but, I'm wondering if I'm a little lean. Since I can start it without the choke when it's cold, I feel like I probably have the jetting at idle pretty dead on. Am I getting lean at the 5-6K RPM range? How would I tell?
THANKS!

Are you running TOO lean.... NO! without that needle and the the fuel screw turned out you most likely are running a bit lean but it's nothing to get kookoo over. you won't get that much more performance out of those. you already did the big performance stuff.(pipe jets and airbox) you can ride the bike now without hurting anything but to get fatter in the mid you'll need the needle and the fuel screwturned out enough.
Thanks! A trip to Home Depot or Lowes for the drill bit and screw and the dealership for the replacement clip should happen sometime this week so, I'll be able to get the rest done on the weekend. I'm glad I won't miss out on any ride time this week and I do like the low end grunt my partial mods gave me.
