Default Hesitation Problem

Hi folks. I just joined up and this is my first thread. I'm new here but I've been lurking for quite a while. The information available here is great so I'm hoping you all can help me. (That is if you decide to read through my novel)

I'm getting a slight hesitation that's becoming a nuisance. It's taken me a while to notice it because it's mostly noticeable while riding off road and I have not done a lot of that since doing some Mods. Now that I have noticed it there though, I feel it all the time. It's just more pronounced off road.

When rolling along in just about any gear with minimal throttle, everything seems to be working fine. A fairly fast roll on or a quick whack of the throttle from there brings on the hesitation. It's very noticeable when rolling along in first gear off road then getting on the gas to (For example) climb a steep incline. When on the street, it seems to quickly stumble through this "bog" and then accelerate quite strong. When off road and climbing that steep grade it seems to really suffer and has even caused me to slip the clutch a little just to get the RPM up in fear of stalling. When you're really on the throttle it seems to work well.

Now, here's the setup I had when I first noticed this. (I also ride mainly near sea level. Usually Sub-1300ft)

Marcelino Cam Mod (Thanks to this Forum)
Stock Exhaust
Air Box Lid removed/Stock Filter
DynoJet Needle - 3.5 from the top (Ill mention more about this)
132 Main, Stock Pilot, Mixture screw out 3 turns as per DJ instructions.

Now when this started, I had already been thinking about leaning out the jetting because I thought I had taken it too far, plus loss of fuel range sucks. So, I backed the Main down 1 size and tried it. (I know the main jet is not the right place to start with a problem like this but I wanted to go smaller anyway.) There wasn't much of a difference so I went down another size. Also decided to reinstall the air box lid to cut down on the intake moan. Tried again and it seems like it may be a little better, but still there. About the needle position at "3.5" - Dynojet recommends putting the 2 washers in the kit above the clip. I noticed the washers were about the thickness of half a clip position so I put one above and one below. I thought this was smart but now I think I might be messing up the needle/slide movement.

So, my current settings...

Marcelino Cam Mod (Thanks to this Forum)
Stock Exhaust
Air Box Lid installed with Snorkel Removed/Stock Filter
DynoJet Needle - 3.5 from the top
124 DJ Main , Stock Pilot, Mixture screw out 3 turns. All per DJ stage 2 instructions.

The next move I plan to make is to get both of those washers installed properly on the needle. This should also lean out the needle. The fact that it stumbles when I'm asking for power makes me think it's too rich. Am I right in this assumption?

What do you all recommend?

Thanks a lot.

Don't try and fix it with the main jet, it is not even in play. It's your air screw or pilot jet.

Ya messing with the main jet was just something I was going to do anyway. I thought if I got closer to DJ's recommended setup I would be in a better position to troubleshoot it.

So we have a vote for the fuel screw setting. Do you think I should try leaning it out? I've heard that if the bike will start without choke, its too rich. If it's a warm enough day, it does. It starts weak, but it starts.

First thing I would verify is the float level-if that's not right then the jetting will be off across the board. You can rig up a piece of clear hose to the drain spout on the bowl and see where you're at to start with.

What RPM range and throttle position do you normally see it? I have a slight flat spot at 7,500 at 1/2 throttle. By using premium fuel it reduces it significantly.

While cruising along at about 3500 to 4000RPM with minimal throttle. When rolling onto the throttle from there, it hits. The faster you snap the throttle open, the more pronounced it is.

Well, since my last post I pulled the slide/needle out and arranged everything properly as per DJ's specs. A quick test ride followed and it seemed to clear up a lot of the problem. So either the way I had it installed was messing up the motion of the assembly or by removing a washer from the bottom, I leaned it out a bit and caused it to work better.

Either way, I wont be sure until I get it on a trail. That's where it seems to really show it's true colors.
