Hard Start question
My son and I went on a short ride on real trails, with mud, rutts, water etc.-tons of fun. He is 15 and about 135lbs, so the KLX 250 is a handful for him, but I was amazed at some of the stuff he got through real well -until the big water hole and then the small stream.
Healmost made it through the water hole -about 16" deep, but slowed down too much, stalled and he couln't catch himself and splash, we laughed our butts off.
Got the bike upright within 15-20 seconds and it was hard to start, but started and ran well.
The small stream was 20"+ deep and a little steep, but smooth coming out the other side and he was a little light on the throttle again and stalled and .....spash # 2!
This timewe got it upright in about the sametime frame, but the water was deeper and we had a headlight about 1/2 full and thetach was a little wierd at first.
We kept trying to start it and thenpushed for while, tried againand repeated until we got to the road, but battery got a littleweak and it sounded like itfired a couple of times, but would'nt start.
I didn't have time to work on it last night, but it would'nt start when I tried before work this morning.
When I gethome,I'm going to take the headlight appart and get the water out, and thenput it on the battery charger and last pull the plug to see if it fouled.
Is there anything else that I should check, that may keep the engine from firing -again, the water was about 2 ' deep and it was on it's side for about 15 -20 seconds.
Thanks, Glen
PS; We had a blast, even though we walked and my son said he had"quite an adventure", so getting these bikes was one of the best ideas I've had in a while!

Thanks guys.
Tony I sent a PM and am definitly interseted in anything I can do proacatively to keep thewater out of thebikes in the future. For one, I think I'm going to get him the 13t front sprocket like mine so he canrun slow with more power.
I have been making the changes to my bike first to evaluate andam going to change his afterwards. So far I've done the 13t, changed the sorkel and drilled though the first exhaust baffle. I have the dynojet kit, but have not installed it yet -butI have run itfor about a week with the steps above andit runs great, though I haven't pulled the plug yet to see if it is too lean, so I'd better pull that tonight too.
Right now both bikes only have about 50 miles on them -almost all trail.
Thanks, Glen

Tony, I looked and I do have milkshake in the crankcase. I am draining the oil and I pulled the plug out of the airbox line and there was water. I Pulled the air cleaner out. What is next -do I fill with more oil run and drain again? I can't get a new filter until tomorrow -should I get a couple and change after running for a while? Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Glen

Even the Carb breather tube mod wouldn't have helped in this case. But it is a great mod if you get into deep water and can keep the bike at a 90 degree angle.
