13/42 (old) ---> 14/49 (new) = *Big Silly Grin

 

That should be equivalent to 13/46. How is it on the road? Slightly screaming?

I don't ride the road much on the KLX... just between trails, so top speed is not my thing. My favorite riding spot is all tight woods where 13/42 rarely got me out of second gear, and even then I often cheated with the clutch.

I haven't tried the new gearing there yet, but just riding around the farm, I'm liking being up higher in the rpm range at the speeds I ride (--> slow).

I went back to 14 on the CS (VS. the 13) because I still had the stock one in good shape, and I've always read larger sprockets are easier on chains.

 

I tried 13/42, still geared too high for me. I am now running 14/48 and pretty happy but I'm gonna slap the 13 on the front with the 48 rear and see what she's like.

 

I am running 14/39.... with S rims/tires. It is greared so crazy high... but it does cruise very nicely with the 330 on the highway.

I need to drop my gearing massively, but I dont want a screamer, and plus the SF needs a new chain to run any bigger than a 39 rear.

 

I'm using a 110 link chain. Stock on the S as you probably know is 14/42 is 3.00 gear inches. If stock SF is 14/39...2.79. With my 48 tooth rear I can use a 13, 14 or 15 front (I don't have the 15) the 15/48 would give me 3.20 which isn't far off stock S. However, I am old, prefer trails and am most used to the old Honda Reflexes which did about 45 wfo the way I had 'em geared. For street I'm wondering... 15/42 would be 2.80, darn near what you have now and without changing chain you could drop to a 13 or 14 if you wanted hmmm... I think each tooth count change in front equals 3 or 4 tooth change in the rear.

 

I mainly trail and 2-track ride and use the standard KLX300 gearing which is 14/50. Rocky, steep climbs in first gear is like a tractor and allows me to more easily change lines and not have to banzai everything steep and/or really rough. I can still do 55mph without too much heartburn.
