So, I generally leave the key in the ignition when I'm at work or home.
Last two mornings, the key and switch were frosty, so frosty you might say it was frozen...pretty solid in fact.
Rolled her into the sun until it warmed up enough to defrost the switch.
Will removing the key stop this?
Never experienced this with any bike. I leave the key in because it's such a pain to put in and take out.
So what do I "lube" it with to prevent this and help the key go in and out?
Put a hat over the dash and key last night to prevent frost build-up, it worked, but the key was still frozen.

I've had good results using graphite on sticky locks. Don't know if it would help your situation but it might be worth a try.

 

I know that removing the key can a be a bit of a pain but I say try removing the key overnight. That way the cover can do it's thing and hopefully keep moisture out. I concur on the graphite powder as lube, other substances can gum up the works.

 

To me it sounds like you have moisture in there already. It's freezing at night. I would use a water dispersing lube like WD-40 to get the water out of there for good.

Last night before I went to bed, I went out and pulled the key out, sprayed the key with some PB Blaster and re-inserted the key, worked it around by turning it on/off, then went to bed.
It's a whopping 15º F this morning, went out and turned the key, no problem! In fact the ignition is smoother than ever, even at 15º!

 

That was my 1% non nonsense contribution to the forum for the month. (drm)

The WD in WD 40 stands for water displacment.

 

I spray down my chain with WD 40 after washing the bike to make sure water does not sit on it. I go back Later and use chain lube on it.

 

Blaaah!...even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.

 

Here we have a fine example of the main cause of my 99% nonsensical post rate, TNC stirring the pot.

I like to think of myself more like a broken clock. A broken clock is still right twice a day.
