New member needs advice on replacing Ignition Switch/Lock
Hi,
Only had my KLX 250 S for a couple of months and already somebody has tried to steal it !
Fortunately the steering lock withstood their attempt to smash it and after just 10yds they got fed-up turning left and dropped the bike on the pavement.
I cannot use the key to unlock the steering, so need to replace the switch/lock.
Is this something I can do myself? (I have not taken the headlamp or instruments off yet to look)
Is it simply a case of unbolting the lock and disconnecting the electrics, or are their some anti-tamper fixings to prevent me doing this?

Not that easy.
You will have to drill the 2 bolts holding the barrel onto the triple.
After that it will be easy.
If you are going to bypass the switch altogether as I did, there are a few things to remember. No 1 is that there is a security resister built into the switch.
Here is a diagram (for the Aus version of an 06)

Hey Nick welcome to the forums. Now you're not the guy that stole someone else's bike and now you're trying to get us to help you are you? Just messing. I didn't see what year your bike is, but if its an 06 or 07 this is the way the lock comes off.

If its an 09 then this is the way, they look the same I think. Either way, I think you're going to have to take off the triple clamp and the gauge cluster and fold it forward.

It is a 2009 model, and I don't want to by-pass the switch, I want to replace the whole thing.
Looking at the images it appears the ignition/lock assembly is normally mounted with 2 torx bolts. Can these be removed easily? or will they have to be drilled out?
If it is going to require drilling and cutting I will give the bike to the dealer, it is new after all and I don't want to bodge it !

I can't remember now if I drilled mine because I had to, or I drilled them because I didn't have the right tool.

i feel your pain, some one had an attempt on my bike, i had to use an easy out with mine because they snapped my bolt heads. very easy if they haven't, you can tell if you wiggle you lock, if it is tight, then probs they haven't been snapped. 2 bolts hold it in place, should come out easily. you can buy a new lock and key from a kawasaki dealer, between $70-100 bucks.
