Default Friend selling her klx

Well it’s been fun but the gal pal is selling her klx it’s been 10 months of ownership. She did a desert race on my old cr250r got hooked & bought my husky te450/Honda crf450x.
I was hoping to do the mcm mod and complete the impromptu to ‘on ramp challenge’ I even made a post. I had comments but no action was ever taken to prove the mod valid, not one person wanted to take up the simple drag race.
Im still trying to get the 09 klx350s back from my ex it’s complicated but that would be comparing apples to watermelon anyways. But after discussing how a cam retiming would result in ‘ungodly or unholy’ hp increases with a couple engine builders in my area, their response was laughter... and other comments too that would only result in animosity here.
So I asked about the dyno results provided legitimizing the mod. Since one builder has a dyno in his shop he said bring the bikes to him. He said ‘bikes’ one modded one not. He would show how he could manipulate the dyno to show a number of graphs providing a wide range of hp & torque readings. And something simple as the ‘on ramp challenge’ was brought up.
I know there are a few fanbois here that rave about this mod but won’t go that extra foot to prove the claims. The wr450f cams are retimed to bring it back to yz450f performance which was hashed over in many a dirt bike magazine. But nothing about ‘insane’ gains on the klx.... hmmmmm imagine that.

So I hope a mcm fanboi here will show their modded bike shredding putting the screws to a stock klx. Come on

prove your poop! Show a video of your machine beating another. And change riders and do it again!

If you've got other machines that are even more specialized than the ol' KLX, then no tears shed about letting it go. Its only a great bike if you want it to be a cheap moped too.

As for the MCM mod and your serious doubt about its effectiveness.. There will still be a time to test it out. Lots of bikes running around with & without to compare. I don't deny the theory. It certainly did not hinder my performance. Hard to say what the share of gain is from exhaust and carb mods too. It does make perfect sense to me with volumetric efficiency in an engine like this. I do think valve timing in this bike is optimized with the MCM from the sound and feel. Do I think other forum members might exaggerate the results a bit? Yes. But they are just excited about the bike, I don't fault them for that. The KLX is never going to breathe fire. Its a modest bike that makes modest gains but its fun to get even a little 'performance' out of it.

Sure, I'll let you sucker me into this again..

While the MCM is proven - with dyno data and dyno butts - over the years, perhaps you should carefully view my vid below and try to duplicate what you see..

You won't be able to. - not without the huge TRQ increase from the MCM.

Vid below is stock header+slipon+MCM+lidless recipe - For those running the full exhaust+MCM+lidless recipe, power wheelie capability is similar but with a higher starting RPM/Speed than what you see below..

Hey I got a story...

I set up a KLX for a local fella, here in DFW.. The whole enchilada - full FMF exhaust system, MCM, lidless CVK setup.. At the owners request, a 13 tooth primary was also put on... He had no prior KLX experience, so he simply enjoyed the bike...

He called me a few months later. He had bought another KLX for his son - stock with with a slipon and a DJ jet kit IIRC. But when they went riding together, they found that his MCM bike would run circles around the sons bike - a performance chasm so profound that the son refused to ride the new KLX, he would only ride the MCM bike.

His call was to ask how to get the new KLX to perform the same as his. Long story short, now it does..

I believe this man is a member.. Maybe he can "chime in"...

The MCM should do more for a 351 than it does for a 250 - if you get it back, you have everything you need to prove effectiveness..

If you simply check out the MCM mod thread you would have seen the dyno charts where a stock EFI euro model was run, then Marcelino did the modification and shows the next run. It is far from an ungodly increase, but it is an increase none the less. He actually hit 25 hp, which isn't exactly earth moving, but it's a good increase over the stock 18 hp. I'm a realist and know that isn't like turning the bike into a KX, but it is a definitely noticeable change seat of the pants and in roll on situations. Didn't yank my arms out of their sockets, but was definitely noticeable. Kind of like getting the jetting right when it's off a bit. Not a major change, but definitely noticeable.

Not everyone is going to run out and blow money on dyno testing. I certainly won't. I'm not racing and it just doesn't matter, as long as there is an increase I'm happy - especially when it's free or very low cost. I mean really, does everyone who makes the cam timing changes in a WR run out and throw them on a dyno? No, they do not, they took the results of the media and accepted it. As I've said before, I read what Marcelino wrote as the reasoning for his work, I'd seen it before done by Joe Minton, a fairly well known knowledgeable rider/mechanic/journalist back in the 80s. He did a Nighthawk S re-time for the same reason and drawing similar results. So I ran with the MCM and was happy with the results. Kind of like when I six ported the Bultaco M66 Sherpa S. It wasn't earth shaking, but it ran better. And on a short track a bit better every lap is big.

I'll race up any on ramp or whatever if you'll show up in Ohio to do so. Then go play on some back roads with the dual sports in east Ohio.

So count me as a convinced MCM rider, but also as a realist. It's good, but not KX or KTM good. Other opinions may differ.
