Yeah, brilliant illustrative pics. Thank you very much! Glad it wasn't an expensive fix too.

Great news, dan. That's about a best case scenario. It's good that it was a sacrificial part rather than some serious internal transmission issue. Great pics.

Good picture of the Red locktite, too! Glad it wasn't more serious...

Can't help but think that your MSR gear lever may have played a part here.

Excellent point. You may be right. My first thought when taking the MSR lever out of its package was "this thing is too beefy" . It's the Honda XR650L lever so I needed to bend it a little to get it right. It was a little harder to bend than the stocker, but bent easily enough that I felt better abuout the "beefy-ness" of it. I was only bending it side to side though. I had taco'ed the stock lever enough times that I felt it was getting close to breaking and I needed a replacement. That pin has probably taken a few shots, (seems like every time I bent the lever it was bent upwards) and I bet it was already bent a bit, but I think Neil may be right. The beefier lever may have made quick work of that pin. FWIW I didn't have my brake snake cable on the new shifter, but even if it were on, I don't think it would have limited the upward travel and saved the pin.
Neil I'm assuming that you have replaced yours. What lever did you get?

Not yet. I have bent it a few times and I just take it off, put in the vice and bend it back into shape.
Local dealer wants $100 for a new one.
I too am worried about how many times I can bend it back before it breaks.

LOL you don't mess around buying shift levers, you just buy a whole new bike eh?

I had about five mild to wild bends on my stocker. Every time I bent it back I was waiting to end up with it in two pieces. The stocker is at least twice as much as the msr here in the states. Maybe it's worth it?

No way is it "worth it" and I told the dealer as much.
35 tops.

I did think to strengthen it with a few welded gussets but that kinda defeats the benefit of having a soft stocker.

Maybe the snake is the answer?
As long as it doesn't transfer the energy into the shaft.

Was going through to start a new thread but finally found this one. I over did it this past weekend at land between the lakes and lowsided pretty hard on the left side. I now no longer have first gear. I am tearing into the shifter cover this weekend to see what the problem is and hope it is the same as Dans.

Dan, do you remember the part number for the shift pin?
