First Bike
If you're riding lots of ruts, rocks and deep sand, ground clearance is most important. My klx400 is close to 300# so I have pretty stiff springs and valving to stay in the top part of the travel in up to medium sized bumps\hits. The bike is a little wider and with soft suspension it liked to grab alot on the trail. It is a tall bike now and goes thru whoops like an aircraft carrier...straight and stable. My yz250 was tall and I had it lowered by an inch and it skips over everything...it's thin, light and stays up in the travel also. No issues with rocks and in ruts. My klx331 weighs about the same as my yz but it likes to catch things on the trail..it is also tall. I'm 5'9" with a 29" inseam...while riding in rocks, the thought of not reaching the ground in situations is always on my mind but have never had any issues. Maybe it's a 4stroke thing?
hey guys, i found a bit of info at the KLR forums (my riding buddy is a member there since he's got a klr), they've got a klx section as well. one of the guys says that there's actually a kawi service bulletin of some sort for the cold start issue
any comments? anyone heard of this before? sounds like it was an instant fix. seems to permanently modify the compression though.
took my 09 klx250s to dealer because, like the others sold, it wouldn't start when below 50 F. at first, dealer said "no problem found". told them to keep it for a week and then try to start it. they did, it didn't. was told that kawasaki said to remove .020" off the exhaust cam compression release tab. they did. it started w the fuel in the bowl; the tank still on the bench. so far so good. was told drilling out enriching jet was a partial symptom reliever, but the grinding of the tab was the real fix.
i was finally told that there was a common cold start problem w newer klx's but since so few were used during cold months, kaw hadn't gotten enough complaints to put out a tech bulletin.
one small step for a klx owner, one giant leap for the factory finally admitting to a problem....hooray for our side...

Only during cranking, that's talking about modifying the ACR. I've seen some talk here about doing the same for installing a kick starter. It would make it easier to spin the motor, which would mean more RPMs, which means more vacuum, which means more fuel being drawn in.
