Exhaust question...

Exhaust question...
Not the usual type either....
Anyway, if I remember correctly the stock exhaust has some sorta catalytic converter built in. Is there a life expectancy on this? My bike is now at over 37,000 kms and lately I have noticed a more strong exhaust fume from it.... just like the older car fumes smelled..... not treated. I am assuming the CC is near its expectancy. Not a big deal to me tho..... but I was wondering if any further degradation may cause performance issues. The bike still runs like a champ still. Just wondering out loud here. Maybe an excuse to start saving for an aftermarket exhaust.

Don't know about an 07 but my 09 had a cat. So it may but don't know for sure, on cars they do go bad but usually do to the long term failure of the O2 sensors and the car running too rich for an extended period of time. But on a bike it would be rather small and maybe more prone to fail but I don't know for sure either. But I'd say a performance pipe is in your future as you won't regret it.

The CAT on the '09 is huge-ish!!! Don't know if any previous model had a CAT, since I think the '09 was the first "50 state legal" model year for the KLX250. I think if the bike is running properly, the CAT will take care of itself. It's just a honeycomb structure that gets flaming hot to burn off excess exhaust gasses... nothing mechanical or chemical or anything like that. Running extra rich will harm it over time, as it tends to clog the honeycomb structure.
If you want an almost new replacement, eBay is loaded with them from people who put aftermarket exhausts on their bikes when they were new.

Ok, other than worries about the honeycomb disintegrating/plugging I shouldn't have anything to worry about. If I find a performance loss later on, my first move will be aftermarket exhaust. NOT interested in replacing with a stock one. If that restores performance, then the cat can be blamed I suppose.
I keep ya's updated as time passes.
