Digital Map Measurer

Digital Map Measurer
I was in Duluth on the weekend and finally found a digital map measurer. I have been on the look for one of these devices for years. You key in the map scale, roll the wheel over the trail that you want to follow and it tells you how many miles/klms you have to cover.
This model normally sells for $10, but were on sale for $3. Great deal, I bought 4 of them with the plan to give them to my riding partners. Problem is, they were made in China, must be old, only part of the display function works so that I cannot read the numbers on any of the units. Now, I know why they were on sale.
Has anyone found a supplier for one of these map measuring devices? Hopefully one that works.

Hi Cous
Thanks for the hint. Popped open two of them and there does not seem to be any loose leads. Parts of the number show on the display and parts of the numbers do not show. There is a light on the end of the unit that shines pretty good, so I do not suspect the batteries (2 per unit).
If it is the batteries, it will cost more to replace the batteries than the unit is worth. But I will check the batteries tomorrow.

LCD displays are usually pressed against a circuit board via a strip of conducting rubber.
Certain segments of the display will not work properly is the contact areas are dirty or not pressed together properly.
Try twisting the display a bit.
If this changes things then see if the display glass can be taken of and the various contacts cleaned.
But for $3!
Maybe it's a bin job.

or old faithful piece of string or wire! waterproof to infinity. Works in all normal temps. (not recommended for use on the sun) pretty much guaranteed forever and cheap as well. Buy a roll and you give out enough to all your buddies and their buddies as well.

Hi Guys
Thanks for the info. The cheap digital units ( now expensive junk) are now in bin.
I really like the string idea, but do not have the patience for it.
I got serious looking for a good unit and have just ordered an analogue unit for $40 (28 plus shipping). I like to stay away from battery operated, as the batteries seem to die, just as you need them. Do the same with tools, no battery operatedtools.
