Im gonna change to a 45T rear sprocket with 520/108 chain but do I need a chain break tool and master link install tool to do this?
Do I have to cut off the old chain or what?

 

Nope - chain removal is pretty easy and you don't need any special tools...

I've said this here before, but I am about to say it again.

I really, really appreciate that write up that you did a while back, Kawi, on how to break and re-install a chain. I have followed that procedure about 4 times now, and every time I do it I think about you and your writeup and how much it has helped me.

On one hand, it's a direct cost savings in that I didn't need to buy the chain break tool from Tusk or Motion Pro. That's nice, but those things are not very expensive anyway. The main thing for me was being able to do the job with standard tools in a pinch. I feel a lot more confident knowing that I can do it with tools that are readily available wherever I am.

Good stuff cwgoff....... I've never had to break a chain but to press the master link together in the field can be a biatch...... I keep a ViseGrip NeedleNose Pliars in my tool kit..... it works fine but I'm definately open to suggestions.

 

That is a great write up Kawi. I didn't even know that dirt bikes have master links you could remove from the factory. Street bike have the master pressed on and the only way to get it off is grind the heads off the master link and replace it and then press the new one back on. It's a pain.

I just got this bad boy and tried it out today, works great lot easier than bashing the rivets out with a hammer and punch and makes pressing the plate on a doddle.
