In an attempt today to cross a very long large puddle today my bike quit on me. Walked it out of the knee deep water and got it started, only to have it happen again in the exact same spot as before. I'm fairly certain that the water level was about the carbs vent lines. After the ride I discovered that pinching those lines off completely caused the bike to die. Can I route them up higher so it doesn't leave me stranded in deep water again?? Do they have to go downwards?

It is often referred to as a T-mod. I made this mod just a few months ago. It involves splicing in a T-fitting and routing the added line to a higher position.

Also, check out the bottom of your airbox. Mine had a hole burnt in it where it is the closest to the exhaust pipe, which allowed water in and stalled my bike in high water crossings.
