Geez, and I was telling you to pop the cam cover off to look at the cam timing... sorry.

I had a similar issue back in 1972. My trials bike would run a bit, then shut off. Not getting fuel. I had no clue. Then one guy I knew stopped by where I was stuck. Looked at the bike, no front fender... he pulled the tank cap vent hose out of the steering stem, squeezed the tip and kind of rolled it... dirt fell out, dried mud. Bike fired up and ran fine.

Glad to hear all is good. I hope the tensioner is working fine for you too. With the right adjustment there will be light ticking when cold, it will quiet down as the bike warms up. If/when you hear ticking when at full operating temp it is time for an adjustment. If the cam chain is seated in (aka not new) it could be several thousand miles or more before you hear any ticking. Might be more.

I know how you feel. Ya hate seeming to be so ignorant to miss something so simple, but hey, it's the last thing anyone would think of. At least it's a no cost item. Thank goodness for that. Imagine tearing into a whole top end thinking something desparate is wrong.

Maybe we need some sticky for trouble shooting going from the easiest - tracing vent tubes and fuel lines - on to the most difficult. It would be nice to know what "freebies" and low cost items to do first.

This one thought has saved me so much time, it's incalculable: "It's ALWAYS something simple, or I won't be able to fix it anyway. So, look for the simplest answers first."

That being said, things like the rectifier ground being inadequate on some bikes, and correctable by "T-ing" in an additional grounding wire, these type of things take some more brain cells and time than a bad battery ground...but, it's still something simple once it is found. (Great job by the fellow that found it, too!)

yah best advice ever stay calm and think straight. I have a tendency to let my frustration get the best of me as im sure others have done. Glad i didn't tear my bike apart.

ohh and also Kriegers product is great. went for a short ride today and no scary noises.

I only have about 2400 miles on my bike, but from what I've seen here in a few different threads, I'm sure I'll be looking into getting one. I don't think I'm going to wait until my stock one starts to give out.

That's not a bad idea. They don't explode or disintegrate or anything. You just start hearing a rattle. Not all of them fail either. If it goes good the thing lasts for ever if not, you end up sticking a 33 buck part in it to last for ever. Just don't look for some shortcut if it does start making noise, there is none.
