Default Buying a used KLX250s - What to watch for?

Hello all! First time poster here and I'm looking for a little advice on re-entering the dual sport world.

Growing up I had a few dirt and dual sport bikes, the last one being a KE100 of which I have fond memories. Now 20 years later I want to relive my youth. Yesterday while on a drive by I noticed my local Yamaha/Honda dealer has something green out front. I drive in and noticed a very clean looking 2007 klx250s with 800 miles. I looked it over and it looked pretty good. I don't have a valid license so I came back later with my brother so he could check it out on the street. When he came back he said is felt "weak." Then again his normal bike is a 900cc Ducati so I don't think he realizes what it should feel like. He did say he thought it handles great and has good brakes. I rode it in the parking lot and on a little trail they have out back and thought the power through 2nd gear was decent. More importantly I was having fun.

Anyway, I put $100 deposit on it and am going to seal the deal tomorrow but before I do I wanted to ask you guys what I should look for and if the deal is good. As I said it's a 2007 with 800 miles and is very clean. Chain adjuster is on "2" which is about right for the miles unless a link was removed but I don't think so from a quick pull on the chain on the rear sprocket. Tires also seem to have the right amount of wear. No signs of being dropped. They are asking $3000. What do you guys think? Good deal? What should I look out for? Unless I find something major I'm going to buy it. It's been too long since I've had a Kawi in the garage.

$3000.00 sounds a bit high for an 07 IMO.
You mentioned you don't have a licence. Are you planning on getting it re-newed? If not why not just get an off road bike since you can't ride the KLX on the road anyway? Just saying.

I have a KLX 06 and I would pay 3000.00 for it with many more miles. If it has not been beat up and it would show if it has been I would think it is a good buy. The dealer should give you 90 days if any major things should good wrong and if he wont I might look some where else.

+1 what Gary2 said. The MSF course is a good thing to take. Here it's mandatory for everyone wanting to get their MC licence.
The KLX is a great bike for on and off road riding.

With so few miles on it I doubt there'll be anything wrong with it. 3k is a bit high but not it's not that bad. There is post purchase price $$ that you have to consider too.
Figure $500 give or take.

I read the title of the post and instantly thought of beardoge and his roll back odometer thing he says he did.
My 06 had 9060 miles on it when I bought it. I am over 11,000 miles now and still going strong

Today's KLX250S is $5300. The early ones had the rear rack which I use daily and nearly a foot of suspension travel front and rear. Yeah, I'd pay $3000 for another '06 like mine or the '07 you mentioned. I have 13,000 miles so far and its like new.
