Worn valve guides will smoke upon startup. Smoke is more blue than white. Black smoke is gas or running too rich. Lots of white smoke is antifreeze in the exhaust.

A worn out engine will smoke when you really beat on it. Some one riding behind you will smell it and see it.

Dirty oil will burn faster than freshly changed oil.

How often did you change the oil?

I think you should properly diagnose the problem before fixing it. Take a wet and dry compression test. Give it a leak down test. Have the valves been adjusted? Sometimes running too rich may help burn oil.

Does it make any noise?

That doesn't sound good. Does the oil smell of gasoline?

Good points.
Will valve seals smoke on startup the same as valve guides (seals were mentioned above)? I really don't know what valve seals are (same as valve seat?), but remember two guides in the ol '69 Impala were pretty worn, causing startup smoke. Ran like a scalded dog after having the top end and carb rebuilt.

Why does rich help burn oil? Is that from the extra fuel leaking into the crankcase and diluting the oil, so that it burns off faster?

Valve seals are on top of the guide under the spring. They can be just O rings or other types of seals. Oil goes down hill when the hot engine sits for a while and burns when you start the engine causing a puff of blue smoke.

Running too rich can wash the cylinder walls and cause oil consumption.

Changing oil brands or types should make no difference.
