Broken Clutch Lever
Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and new to motorcycles. I just bought a klx250s last weekend and I've already done the unthinkable. I dropped it on it's side. [:@]
When the bike fell it bent/broke my clutch lever. I ordered a new clutch lever online, my only problem is; I can't figure out how to get the old cluth lever off the bike. There is a clutch cable attatched to the lever and I can't see how it comes off.
Have any of you replaced the clutch lever and is there a trick to getting it off the bike?
I appreciate anny help that you can give.
Thanks,
Dave
Also, here are some pics of my bike and it's little problem.

If you rotate the adjuster, you will notice both threaded piece have a slot in them. Just rotate both so that the slots line up with each other and with the slot in the lever. Then you will be able to slip the cable out.
And now that you have the first drop out of the way, you can now enjoy your bike without worrying about it so much. The first ding is always the hardest.
The first time I dropped my KLX the cheap plastic hand guard broke off. I was crushed! When my KTM was brand new, I went to move it on the stand and it fell off away from me and broke the brake lever. I said to myself, "that didn't take long, did it?" That was before I even had a chance to put on the bark busters.
Get some good solid hand guards and you won't have to worry about your levers.

Don't feel too bad, it took me all of a week to bend my clutch lever and break the (useless) stock handguard. Ordered a stock replacement lever from the local Kawi dealer but didn't install it until my "real" handguards arrived. Use the search feature here and you will find plenty of information on the pros and cons of the various types. I went with the D-Flex guards but there are plenty of others.
Replacing the lever was a piece of cake, although for some reason your parts look a bit different from mine (a stock '07). All I had to do was remove the pivot bolt for the lever, slide it out of it's housing and pop out the cable end from the recess on the underside of the lever. Drop the cable end into the recess on new lever, slide it back into housing, put the pivot bolt back in and done in about 5 minutes.

Hey, thanks.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to drop the KLX in the first week. Now I know what not to do.
I'm going to go get me some hand guards this week and I'll try and fix the clutch lever tomorrow.
I'll post pics as soon as I'm done.

Careful with aftermarket clutch levers. I had to replace mine and now the bike will not start unless it is in neutral. I found the aftermarket level doesn't touch the micro switch to make the connection when pulled in like the stock one.
I can hot wire the switch, then it will start in gear, lever in or out, not a big deal, just FYR. Same with the brake lever, many do not have the pin to hit the brake light switch.
