IDRIDR, Yes we must be relatively close neighbors. You're a legend on here and so I'm looking forward to your wisdom and advice.
Thanks for the suggestions on the local shops. I'm sure to check them out.
Now that spring weather has finally arrived, I'm looking very forward to getting out on miles and miles of gravel, fire roads, and single tracks. A giant multi-day trip that includes Deadwood, Yankee Fork, Shoup, Macgruder, Burgdorf, Yellow Pine has been on my bucket list for a while. I'm anxious that it's finally coming to fruition.

agreed, i just read through a ride report on advrider by cannonshot that covered those areas. its a long way from tennessee but i want to make it some day!
I had a set of Tusks on my KLR650. They held up pretty well except for the nylock nuts which kept stripping (my Tusks took a beating). I ended up replacing all of them with prevailing torque nuts. No more stripped nuts after that.
I ordered some Tusk brand guards and they arrived this week. They appear to be good quality stuff. I'm planning to mount them to the stock bars for now, until I figure out exactly which after market bars I'll eventually end up with. I also ordered Ram Mount mirror and phone holder (for GPS/mapping). Ram makes good stuff as well. Very pleased with their products so far.
Next up is probably an after market rear rack, and a larger fuel tank. But I'll start another thread for those items.
The rotopax holder mounted right to the rack (there are dedicated holes for it). The hardest thing was figuring out what to do with the OEM tool kit. It is in the small, red dry-bag just above the tail light.
I have been kicking around the idea of a larger fuel tank also, but I think I will see how the Rotopax works for me instead. I like not having to carry the extra weight unless I need to. I plan on keeping the Rotopax empty unless I need the extended range. With a larger tank I would probably fill it all the way up every time.
One obvious upgrade to me is a Seat Concepts Comfort seat. I had one of these on my KLR and it was wonderful. I did 500 mile days on that bike and was able to walk without discomfort afterwards. A 500 mile day on the oem KLX seat might result in corrective surgery.
