Default The best bang for the bore

As this comes up almost every week or more. What is the best bang for the bore? And for those that have done it, do you wish for more?

I can't speak for 340 since I have never ridden one, but I did first do the 300 (292cc) and then later did the 331cc. The 331cc does for the 300 what the 300 did for the 250. So IMO, if you're going to go to the time and effort of the 300, you may as well do the 331, unless you are just really strapped for that last few hundred bucks (unlikely). Kind've like if you want do have some fun, should you stop in Primm at Whiskey Pete's, or drive the extra 40 miles and hit Vegas proper.

That's interesting...I was wondering about that...

I had been watching ebay for months. Used KLX300 cylinders were going for nearly as much as what Ron Ayers (www.ronayers.com) wanted for a new one. I had decided I wouldn't pay "new" prices for an "unknown" used, got tired of waiting and bought new. I've been wondering if I should send my original cylinder off to be bored, now I think that I might. I have been really pleased with the increase in power, I might just bump it up a little more...

I'm going for the 331 over the 340 for no other reason than the nickaseal coated cylinder and the simplicity of one stop shopping. (kustom kraft)

Yeah, I definitely prefer to just get new rings instead of worrying about overbore on the sleeved versions. Sleeves wear-out way faster, so what's to point in having 9cc more?

I think to much is made about the sleeved bore. My compression check have been spot on and If Ihave problems I'll sleeve the stock cylinder. No if I can just advance the stupid timing I'll see real gains.

So the 340 is sleeved with no rings. Very glad that you brought that up. [sm=smiley20.gif].I thought it would have been ringed & sleeved.

Heres a question. When choosing the 330 kit from Kustom Kraft, do they provide the cylinder jug or do I need to send them a 300 jug for overboring. $769.00 seems to be offely high, but also seems worth it too.

Looks like that price includes the cylinder. Used to be you sent them an old one to be bored and they charged $425 I think it was. Probably much faster turn around now too since you don't have shipping time to get your cylinder to them, nor the usual wait for the time to bore and plate.

Kustom Kraft does list $440 for the KLX300 to 330 mod. But they clearily state that you need to proved a cylinder jug. Maybe around Januray, I'll give them a call to find out.

I can only image what the 330 would be compared to 250 as stock. . Gotta start saving those pennies thou.

??... both kits have rings. The point I was trying to make is that the nikasil coating used by Kustom kraft doesn`t wear with normal use, so you will only need to replace the rings when it comes time to rebuild. With a sleeve, you normally have to overbore as well as change the rings..

Talk to Marvin at Kustom Kraft. He can explain all of the details since they do sleeves for other models of bikes as well as plating for the KLX. He says that the Nikasil plating is definitely the way to go if you have enough material left over once you bore.
