Me and another guy in the shop adapted 4 separate automotive coils to our '73 Z1-900 Kawasakis back in the day. We used a ballast resistor from JC Whitney to keep from burning up the points. The system was awesome. I set my plug gap at .055". Plug life was great, and mileage improved dramatically. Those dual-lead OEM coils were junk. Comparing them to candles gives candles a bad name.

OK Mark...have we taken this thread far enough afield yet? If not I have a story about a wiener dog, a rabbi, a democrat, and a broke down Harley.
Gordon is my hero! He liked SR500s too!

I'd like to hear the story...

I do like the Z1 fix. I know they did some work with the dual leads with a couple different layouts. I never saw the final conclusions. I didn't have twin leads so I guess I didn't pay attention. But I did pay attention to the SR work. Exhaust ID and length have held true for decades. Virtually all flat track pipes conform - 1-5/8" ID and 33" long, with a megaphone adding a bit too. Conclusions about the intake port made it quite interesting since it was restrictive enough that a 34mm would flow about the same as a 38 mm Mikuni... but I digress... the story...
