My apologies, I was wrong.

All of the pictures of bad bearing surfaces online are so obviously thrashed, so when I saw some small marks on my bearings and assumed they were normal wear. I took the cams and cap over to a friend who used to work on cars and he said they were damaged and "maybe worth trying at the track but unfit for public roads".

I'll keep up the search for a new motor. There's a used top end on eBay, if I seriously consider that route I'll bring the engine into a mechanic and get their opinion.
