Default Air Filter with plastic frame does not fit back into the airbox

I just did my first air filter cleaning and I do not understand how to get the filter with the plastic frame back in the air box. I could have really squeezed the plastic frame but I was afraid it was going to break or tear the filter. I ended up putting the plastic frame in first and then fitting the air filter on while it was inside the box. Is this how it is done?

No, you're supposed to put it all in at once. You do gotta kinda squeeze the whole shebang to get it into the airbox but once its in it'll bend right back into shape. I wouldn't recommend doing frame then filter, because you run the risk of not seating the filter properly on the frame and into the intake boot. That'd be a major bust. The plastic frame is really flexible, bend away!

Do be careful of the grey lip of the filter. Mine has the beginnings of a tear, I'll be investing in a filter before much longer.
