I really don't see the big problem with washing filters in gasoline. Are you no-gas guys sensitive to fumes? We all have a big can of it and it cuts the oil and dirt like crazy. I have never actually had a filter or seam degrade, been thinking that's a myth put out by the makers of fancy filter cleaner products.

I don't smoke. Maybe the no-gas folks are afraid of catching on fire?

I use foam filter cleaner, or Dawn dishwashing liquid.

Old thread I know but this very problem is why I've switched to pods. Went to remove the filter and all I got was a handful of filter material. I'll be ripping that damn air box out and going with pods, The carbs were full of deteriorated filter material and the bike was running perfect. Jet kit, pod filters and muffler mods coming up. I know this is old but haven't read about it on here yet. Yes, I'm a newb.

sounds like your filter is really over due for a new one if material is in the carb? I’ve had no issues after 20k miles of changing the filter with the carb spotless and I run. My filter I bit light in oil since I don’t ride dirt very much
